My experience of running the ISTC podcast continued in February with an interview with the knowledgeable Chris Knowles of Docmate Services. Chris has extensive experience in the Oil and Gas industry and was recommended as an expert, and he did not disappoint. I had so much great content that I struggled to edit it down to 30 minutes.
Struggles always result in breakthroughs and this one forced me to research podcast editing techniques. The tool I use for editing the podcast is Adobe Audition and although I checked out their help, the real breakthrough came from a great blog post by Lower Street, a podcast production agency, I recommend reading: How to Edit a Podcast: Audio Levels, Content, Tips, Trailers & More | Lower Street.
The key advice for me was to:
- First, listen to the full recording and make notes of subject areas and times.
- Next, read over your notes and check the flow – natural conversation meanders and you may be able to move sections of speech to organise the flow of information better.
- Then, edit backwards (start near the end of your recording) so you don’t mess up the timings on your notes.
This approach was much more efficient, and you can listen to the result here: https://istctechcomm.podbean.com/e/the-podcast-strikes-oil-gas/
